It’s interesting how our moods have such a reaction to the outcome of our day. Think about a day that you went to work in a bad mood, how productive was it? I had a bad day last week, something happened that really annoyed me, I got to the end of the day and looked at my to-do list and realised I ticked nothing off. Now at the time I just thought ‘that would be right’ and continued having a bad day. But now looking back at it and thinking about a day when I went to work happy, the outcome of the day was the complete opposite. I was focused, happy and productive, things got done easily.
When we are angry, distracted or upset, even when they do not relate to work it has a ripple effect that not only disrupts your day but that of the whole team. Negative thoughts feed negative behaviour and before you know it you have spent the entire day consumed by the wrong focus, leaving you a day behind and feeling even worse!
Keeping a good mood is not easy, there are so many things in day to day life that can be stressful and distracting. But here are 7 tips to start the day off on the right foot
1 – Eat the right food. Putting the right fuel into your body really can make a big difference in your mood and mindset. Eating fatty ‘heavy’ foods can cause you to feel sluggish, while nutritious ‘light’ foods allow your body to feel healthy. Assisting to keep focused and positive.
2 – Get moving. A walk in the fresh air can do amazing things for a negative mood. Get the blood flowing and clearing the mind to allow you to focus on the positive points in life. Keeping the body active helps to keep the mind clear.
3 – Loosen up. You know the saying ‘all work and no play…’ take the time to relax and breath. Allow yourself the time to relax and let go of the day’s stresses. Get a good night sleep and be ready for the new day.
4 – Have a plan. Long term and short term goals are so important. Planning how to reach the goals is even more important! When you see your goal and not see how to get there it can add to the stresses of running a business. Have a plan in place that you know you can achieve and work towards it each day. This will assist you to stay focused and feel positive with your direction, even on a bad day.
5 – Assess your stress. Determine where the stress is coming from, Home or work? And look at ways to ease it. Stress is everywhere and in every task, it’s how we deal with it that makes or breaks us. Once you know what the trigger is for your stress or bad mood you can take action in removing or reducing the effect it has on your life.
6 – Reward your achievements. Do something nice for yourself, regularly! How often do you get to the end of the month only to realise you have not done anything for you in that entire 30 days! You have done everything for the business, your clients, the household, your partner and the children, but nothing for you! This leads to feeling burnt out and resentful. Block out some time on your calendar just for you. 30 min to walk on the beach, read a book or take a relaxing bath. Join a sports team or book club. Do something that is just for your soul that makes you feel nurtured. BUT do not feel guilty for it afterwards!
7 – Motivate yourself with music. Music really is good for the soul. Keep a playlist of upbeat music that you enjoy listening to. Take notice of how you feel after listening to a song, does it make you happy or sad? Do you feel inspired and ready to take on the world or down and ready to give up? Pick the songs that speak to you and listen to them in the car on your way to work or your next big meeting. Let music help prepare you for the challenge you are about to face.
Whatever it is that helps you stay happy, positive, focused and relaxed, make sure you add more of it into your daily life. After all, no matter if you are at home with the family or at work with your work mates, you may as well do everything you can to enjoy every second.
